We’re a group of Stanford Product Design Engineers that believe creative play has the power to develop creative confidence and independence through hands on exploration.
Boxly, a 100% recyclable cardboard fort-building kit that allows kids to build their own forts and determine how they play with them. Boxly is a toy where assembly is required, but instructions are not. It is designed for easy assembly and fast clean-up, so kids can independently build life-size forts without taking apart the living room. Boxly has the familiarity of a cardboard box, without the constraining shape or size.
What do you see as the biggest opportunity in your industry?
We see a huge opportunity in producing in the United States as well as in creating environmentally friendly products. Aside from the manufacturing aspects, we see an opportunity in building toys. We love the magic that happens when kids are pulled away from their screens and inspired to build and create with their hands.
What impact will changes in your industry have on consumers? the world?
The toy industry is critically important, as it is the most natural and exciting space for kids to learn, grow, ask questions, and create. With more and more of an emphasis on technology-based toys, kids become dependent on decisions made for them and lose the inspiration to define their own play. Boxly allows kids to address the fear of building and of building big by providing them with the confidence — and the cardboard — to create.
What is your biggest goal right now?
Our biggest goal right now is to introduce Boxly to the world and introduce the importance of creative and open play. Defining your own play, creating constraints, and imagining can be scary but is an incredibly powerful mechanism through which kids can grow and learn.
What kind of support or types of people do you need to accelerate your success?
We have been incredibly fortunate with our mentors through our university, our phenomenal Kickstarter backers, and our motivated and professional manufacturers. For success in this space, it is most important to have a passion for kids and a desire to get kids building.
What makes you or your work different from everybody else?
Boxly introduces children to the concepts of rapid prototyping and large scale building by using materials and forms they are largely familiar with: cardboard and plastic. The cardboard draws on the familiarity and excitement surrounding a cardboard box, and the injection molded connectors are an easy and intuitive way to connect panels and boxes to create large structures and spaces.
Boxly is not just a toy; it is an opportunity for kids to imagine, define, and create their own space.
