What do you do?
I spent 20+ years working in the field of data management, CAD, PLM and collaboration. I worked for large companies such as Dassault Systems and Autodesk. I also worked for startups (SmarTeam as part of Dassault Systems) and founded Inforbix (startup that was acquired by Autodesk in 2012).
I’ve been sharing my thoughts about engineering and manufacturing software by daily blogging for the last 6 years at BeyondPLM (http://beyondplm.com).
These days, I’m consulting manufacturing and software companies at BeyondPLM. This is my consulting and social media brand.
What do you see as the biggest opportunity in your industry?
Moving from databases (centralized) paradigm into network paradigm will create a biggest opportunity in manufacturing. The meaning of network in my view, is going beyond technology. It is about communication between companies, people, ability to collaborate and sharing information.

PLM and changes in manufacturing industry:
What will change existing PLM paradigms
What impact will changes in your industry have on consumers? the world?
Product customization is one of the trends that changing the manufacturing landscape these days. Mass production was a mainstream for many manufacturing companies and industries.
The percentage of “configurable” and flexible manufacturing facilities will be growing. It will include online configurators, flexible configuration platforms and integration with production and supply chain. New type of software will play a significant role in this modernization. It is a huge opportunity and the way to re-shape the future of manufacturing.
Another significant change is availability of alternative manufacturing options for broader market. Today, you can found hardware business by combination of crowdfunding, 3D printing prototypes and outsourcing of manufacturing to China. We see a growing number of companies doing so. After all, it will create a different manufacturing industry.
What is your biggest goal right now?
I’n discovering manufacturing industry and trends using my PLM consulting and using social media. I have plans for new projects in social media this year – more social collaboration, social networking and a book about PLM – plmbook.com.
More information about my plans for this year is here – http://beyondplm.com/2015/02/09/a-message-to-my-readers-about-beyond-plm-in-2015/
What kind of support or types of people do you need to accelerate your success?
I’m looking for networking, information sharing and collaboration. In my view, this is a very important element that can make a whole industry better. I’m available for consulting, social media networking, speaking opportunities and writing.
What makes you or your work different from everybody else?
Engineering and manufacturing is a very conservative industry. The practice of open data and information sharing was not popular in the industry until very recently.
My believe is that openness, collaboration and information sharing can be a significant differentiators in the industry. I’ve been applying these principles in many places – I’ve been sharing my thoughts via blog for a very long time, the software I developed at Inforbix helped to search and share engineering data in the organization.
