What do you do?
I’m an artist who works in a variety of media. I’m also an avid photographer. I’m just a general all-around creative who loves to learn new things all the time. I’ve dabbled in computer animation, made jewelry, and even designed fabric.
What do you see as the biggest opportunity in your industry?
I think people are starting to move away from the big box retailer mentality where products are basically boring and uninspiring. I’ve seen an increase in the indie craft market scene and the rise of Maker Faires. I think anyone who can create something unique that can’t be easily found in Walmart or Target have the potential to make a modest living.
What impact will changes in your industry have on consumers? the world?
Right now I’m seeing the decline in stores that have been around for a long time. All of the RadioShack stores in my area have been closed down after being in business for decades. The Kmart in my area is having a going out of business sale and the word is that neither Kmart nor its parent company Sears is long for the world. I think independent artisans and makers have the potential to fill in the void by the loss of these businesses.
What is your biggest goal right now?
To try to make a living doing the things I love the most.
What kind of support or types of people do you need to accelerate your success?
Meeting fellow artists, crafters, and photographs. I think it would be cool if we could all band together and open an alternative Walmart where, instead of cheaply made goods that came from sweatshops, there could be high quality goods made by artisans making a living wage. I know it sounds idealistic but it’s amazing what can be accomplished if people would simply get together and organize.
What makes you or your work different from everybody else?
Most other creative types tend to just stick with one thing (such as doing only paintings or doing only fused glass or doing only knitting). I like to do a variety of things not because I’m hyperactive but because I believe that variety is the spice of life. Sometimes one can come up with something interesting by combining more than one type of arts and crafts.
